A Federal Firearm License permits license-holders to sell guns on the National Firearms Act weapon list, which includes accessories like silencers as well. The entire application process takes about sixty days to complete. However, before you can get an FFL license, you will need to let the local police headquarters know that you want to apply.
FFL applicants are required to fill out a special tax registration as well as the application for the Return National Firearms Act through the United States Department of Justice, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Additionally, applicants need to fill out the certificate of compliance and a pair of fingerprint identification cards and send those along with the application. Finally, with the application fee must come a pair of 2 by 2 photos.
If you wish to apply for a licence for FFL, you need to be at least 21 years old, and non-immigrant aliens are not permitted to ship, transport or possess with any NFA weapons. You must have the proper zoning in accordance with city, county and state laws, and you must have registered as a business in your state. There may be no felony convictions, nor may you have been dishonorably discharged from the military, and applicants must have never violated the Gun Control Act. A thorough background check will be performed, and your building needs the proper security and storage available for the guns, and it must be a permanent structure that has specific times set to do business.
After processing your FFL license, the local supervisor will be informed that you should be interviewed. The interview takes place in your field and needs to be done face to face with an Industry Operations Investigator. You must review the application to prove its validity, and the investigator will create a report about you, the location of your business and whether he or she feels you should have a license.
For a three year license, an FFL license costs $200 initially and $90 thereafter. After getting the first FFL license, getting a Class III license is easy, though it costs an extra $500 in taxes yearly due on the first of July. As always, your local laws must permit you to sell NFA firearms in the area in order to legally conduct business, and you must completely remove all firearms from the area if you are no longer interested in renewing your license for FFL.
